What Do You Need?

The key question to ask yourself when looking for payroll management software is just that: what do you need?  When comparing software programs, consider these aspects of the software, should you need to use them.
  1. Does the software offer taxation requirements for your jurisdiction?  (Taxes are one of the most complex factors any software program has to manage, but they must be as accurate as possible.)
  2. Do you need software to manage hourly employees?  If so, you'll need to consider local laws in terms of time punches
  3. and overtime premium payments.  There may also be differences for shifts and the payroll software will need to be able to handle shift differentials.
  4. Do you need a payroll software that can handle multiple locations?  If so, look to a payroll company that allows payroll to be managed as a whole, but also individually by location address.
  5. Do you need payroll software that is for union based employees?  Many considerations have to be managed here including union requirements for taxation, benefits and overall management of paychecks.
  6. Do you need a payroll software to calculate benefits:  Retirement plans, insurance coverage, and other items must be covered.  Loans from retirement plans such as 401(k)'s should also be considered closely.
The payroll software you select must meet all requirements you have for it.  If it does not, it is useless to you.  The good news is that there are many software programs available, covering virtually any area that you need help with

Comparing Products Successfully

When buying payroll software, you will find various types of products on the market.  Once a product meets your needs in terms of how it functions, look to the software in terms of what else it offers.  Many software programs are loaded with extra features and details.  If these items are of use to you, they may be worth investing in.  If they are not something you need or will use, they should not be included in the software you select.  Buying them will cost you more money for no reason.  Instead, look for software that only includes what you need to save.

In addition, look at which programs come along with the payroll software you are buying.  The more programs with the payroll software, the more costly the process will be.  In some cases, spam, spyware or even worse viruses can be packaged with the software.  Most of this is harmless, but it can cause programs with your computer network.  Therefore, when buying from third party retailers of software, insure they have a good record of accomplishment and that you know what it is that you are downloading.

Getting reviews of payroll software is also important.  Look at what other companies have to say about the software they have purchased.  Find out what it is they do not like, and what they do.  Most importantly, consider how accurate, time saving and easy to use the software is.  If you do have questions about what is included in the software or the function of it, most software manufacturers can be reached to ask questions to.  It is far better to get this information now and walk away with the best type of payroll software for you rather than wait and have to deal with complex and costly problems.  Payroll software should be easy to use and accurate.
